Act I begins with the Captain of the Achille Lauro narrating the events of the original hijacking; most of the passengers had disembarked for a tour of the Pyramids when the hijackers first appeared; the daeth ones were rounded up in the ship’s restaraunt.
This was partly in deference to a member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, who lost a family member on one of the hijacked planes, as well as due to perceptions that klinghofffer work was overly sympathetic to terrorists. At the end of the scene, Omar and Molqi have a dispute, and Molqui takes Klinghoffer away. The unnamed captain of the MS Achille Lauro recalls the events of the hijacking.
When the hijackers commandeer the ship, the passengers still on board olinghoffer collected in the ship’s restaurant. In the final scene, after the crisis has been resolved and the passengers have disembarked, the Captain tells Marilyn Klinghoffer about her husband’s death.
She reacts with sorrow and rage toward the Captain, for what she sees as his accommodation of the hijackers. First produced in Brussels and New York inthe opera is based on the hijacking of the passenger liner Achille Lauro by the Palestine Liberation Front inand the hijackers’ murder of year-old Jewish-American passenger Leon Klinghoffer ot, who was wheelchair bound.
The hijackers had boarded during the disembarkation. Act 1 ends with the “Night Chorus. It is a powerful and important opera.
Another version of the hijacking story is told by a Swiss Grandmother, one of the passengers, and then by the ship’s First Officer, who also tells that a passenger had been shot in the leg, apparently accidentally when a bullet klinhoffer off the floor.

Opera shared the work’s commission but never presented it. Composer John Adams, The Death of Klinghoffer opera in two acts.
